After reading the letter, I immediately became angry. I agreed that both of us weren’t happy and was relieved that he was finally going to let me go, but I was angry because he wanted to keep Jamie. Jamie was my daughter and I felt like she needed to be with her mother. He was making it seem like I was unfit when I wasn’t. If I had to stop partying and sober up to get my daughter, then I would. I was not about to let him put me out the door because he wanted to make a statement. I didn’t know exactly how he found out about me and Lisa, but it didn’t even matter. Everything was now out in the open and nothing could be taken back.

I was going to have to find a job and somewhere to live. If I was going to have to fight him for custody of my daughter, then I would. I was not going to go down without a fight. I was not going to leave my daughter with him. It wasn’t about to go down like that. I balled up the letter and ripped it into tiny pieces. I pulled out my cell phone so I could call Lisa to pick me up, but I thought better of it. Instead, I called a taxi to pick me up in an hour. I was just going to have to stay at a hotel tonight until I figured out what I was going to do next.

I looked around our room and began to fold up my clothes and pack them into different trash bags. I came across a picture of me and Xavier when we had first started dating. I took a long look at the picture and noticed that we were smiling and happy. A single tear rolled down my cheek. I just prayed that I wasn’t making a mistake by walking away from Xavier. After cleaning up the room that Xavier and I used to share, I worked my way into our living room. I packed up a few more of my things and waited patiently until the taxi honked its horn to let me know to come outside.
